Apple or Cherry Strudel
The thin one with fruit in it.
Ingredients
½ pkg. Filo dough leaves (cut in half)
½ cu. melted margarine
2 cans apple or cherry pie filling
or
8 fresh apples, peeled, cored and sliced
½ cu. sugar
1 t. cinnamon
2 T cornstarch
or
2 cans sour pitted cherries (drained)
⅔ cu. sugar
½ t. almond extract
2 T cornstarch
Directions
If you are using canned apple or cherry pie filling, you don't have to do anything!!
If using fresh apples or canned tart cherries, mix the fruit with the sugar and the cinnamon. In saucepan, mix fruit, cornstarch and about l/2 cu. of water over medium heat until boiling. Cook and stir for about 1 minute until fruit is slightly thickened. Remove from the heat. If you wish, you can use the reserved juice from the cherries in place of the water.
Using baking dish approximately 9x13", layer leaves of filo dough with butter until you have used up 10 leaves. Spread fruit mixture on top of filo dough. Now layer l0 more leaves with butter. Cut the top layer of filo dough.
Bake at 375F for about 45 minutes, until golden brown on top. Cool before slicing.
